Zach had three goals when he started with atWork Australia; he wanted more skills, a local job and help to gain his Driver’s Licence.
He started working with his Job Coach, Todd, in the atWork Australia Disability Employment Services office in Umina, NSW. With little experience behind him and a number of health and wellness barriers, Zach had little confidence an employer would want to hire him.
Todd and Zach talked about different industries and Todd suggested hospitality, although, at the time, Zach wasn’t confident about serving customers, however, liked the idea of hospitality.
They decided a role in the kitchen could be a good starting point and they could look at slowly providing more opportunities as he became more comfortable.
“Zach likes to keep busy. Working a casual job, looking after his mum, and finding time to meet with friends,” said Job Coach Todd.
“I wanted to support him to reach his goals and build his confidence as I could see he was motivated and would make a great team member for any employer.”
Todd called employers on Zach’s behalf, advocating for him and his abilities. It took a while, but Zach found Todd a good fit. It was a kitchen hand role in a local café and bar.
While he was in the role, they worked together to find Zach short courses to improve his skills. He completed a Responsible Service of Alcohol, Responsible Conduct of Gaming, Bar Skills course, Barista course and gained his Forklift Licence.
He has even achieved his goal of obtaining his Driver’s Licence.
“The short courses I completed were required for the job and the bar skills course has helped me to progress to the front bar area,” said Zach.
“The short courses helped Zach with his career progression. He is excited to learn new tasks and enjoys the hands-on duties and service. Something he thought he wouldn’t be able to do because of his anxiety, and now he is thriving,” said Todd.
Work has given Zach a new sense of independence and increased confidence.
“I now have more stability, freedom, and I’m more independent. I feel more confident, and my Mum was excited an employer was willing to give me a go,” said Zach.
