Regardless of how long it’s been, everyone can remember and tell stories about their first job. For atWork Australia client, Kane, this is only a new memory and one he will never forget. Kane said, “You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for a week.”
Although Kane is happily employed now, there were times he thought paid employment was impossible. Kane lives with ADHD and is autistic, he never thought it would be possible to secure a job. Kane continued, “I think a lot of employers fear the word autism, they might think we are not as capable and continue looking for other candidates.”
At 22-years old, Kane connected with atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia team in Georgetown, Tasmania, to get tailored support to secure his first job.
Kane was introduced to his Job Coach, Isabel, the pair had an in-depth discussion about Kane’s employment goals. Kane shared that in addition to his health barriers, he also didn’t have a drivers license and had low confidence in his own ability.
To help fast track the process, Isabel engaged the support of atWork Australia Employer Engagement Consultant, Brendan, to open the door to new opportunities in the area.
The group met on a regular basis to help boost Kane’s confidence and discuss a variety of opportunities.
Soon enough, Isabel and Brendan come across a vacancy, which they thought would be perfect for Kane.
Isabel explained all the details of the role to Kane and how she thought it would be a great opportunity. Isabel included Kane’s mum in the conversation, who agreed to transport him to and from work if he was successful in securing the position.
With Kane and his mum on board, Brendan approached the employer and secured an interview. Kane was excited about the opportunity, but extremely nervous and anxious about the interview. Both Isabel and Brendan continued to provide their support in preparation for the interview, boosting his confidence and helping him to believe in himself.
Kane said, “I am so grateful for the support from atWork Australia, it would not have been possible for me to find work on my own.”
Kane’s Job Coach, Isabel, said, “I sat with Kane at every appointment and tried to boost his motivation. We worked very hard to help Kane progress to employment, I am so glad to see him enjoying his new job.”
