For Disability Employment Services client, Edward, thinking about returning to work after a long period of unemployment was negatively impacting his mental health.
He was feeling anxious about returning to work, but he explained to his Job Coach, Khala, at the Eureka office in Ballarat that he wanted to challenge himself to find new employment.
Edward also did not have a driver’s licence, meaning he was limited in his job searching.
Khala supported Edward to find a short-term employment opportunity of just three days. This would allow him to trial returning to work, understand his capability and build confidence.
“The short-term work allowed Edward to build his confidence and capacity to re-enter ongoing employment,” said Khala.
Soon after this short-term opportunity, the atWork Australia team were able to place Edward into a part time role as a Laundry Attendant.
The team helped him financially to purchase work-related clothing and a new phone so he could be informed of his shifts.
“Getting a job and working has made me feel back to normal, because I am contributing back into society, my confidence and self-worth is back,” said Edward.
“atWork Australia have supported me to find work, and it was a really great experience.”
“Edward has been a pleasure to work with,” said Khala.
“He worked hard to combat his anxiety and is now feeling mentally healthier back in employment.”
“Employment has given Edward a new look on life and has really increased his confidence. Employment is not only going to benefit him but also his family.”
