As a child, Workforce Australia client, Tami, was raised “in the system”. She describes her childhood as traumatic and is now committed to improving the lives of youth in the Beaconsfield, area.
When Tami found herself unemployed five years ago, she began volunteering at the local Beaconsfield Fire Brigade to keep herself busy.
During her time volunteering, she has progressed the fire service to taking on children living with disability into their youth program. She also runs drives to collect items for the disadvantaged and partakes in community events and fundraisers.
When Tami started working with her Job Coach, Sarah, she shared that she had goals to open a drop-in center in the area.
“Tami is very driven to do good in the community. She appreciates that the Points Based Activation System allows her to include this work as part of her points while she looks for paid employment,” said Sarah.
“Tami can focus on supporting the remote community whilst meeting her requirements supporting her to feel a sense of achievement.”
Tami’s underlying health issues mean that some roles are not suitable for her, however, she is now focusing on her health and mentality.
With the support of atWork Australia, Tami is also completing a course in supporting the elderly living with Dementia, and a Mental Health First Aid course.
These courses will support Tami to find employment which allows her to still support the community and follow her passion but find paid employment within her barriers.
“Since starting with us, Tami has undertaken short courses in-between maintaining a farm, calling local council to do more for the local community, and has shown some real focus on her mental and physical health. Through her dedication to her health, Tami has been able to increase her activities and performance,” said Sarah.
Tami has been spotlighted recently by Beaconsfield house; they have requested her to be a guest speaker to talk about her life and the efforts she has made to turn it around.
“Tami continues to thrive and has constant communication with us on her progress.”
While Tami is yet to find paid employment, her personal progression supported by atWork Australia and Workforce Australia is a massive achievement and we look forward to seeing what is next for Tami.
