First Nations Disability Employment Services client, Derick, entered the atWork Australia office in Acacia Ridge, QLD wanting work to support his family.
Derick entered the office with one goal in mind – to re-enter the workforce, as soon as possible. He was wanting to support his child, and his mother. To achieve his goal, he was partnered with Job Coach, Jeanne.
In their first appointment together, Jeanne got to know Derick, his goals, previous work history and any concerns that he had on re-entering the workforce after one year. It was in the appointment that his eagerness to enter work was unveiled.
“Derick came to atWork Australia incredibly keen to start looking for work,” said Jeanne. “He stated his ideal job would involve physical labour.”
With this goal in mind, Jeanne connected with our Employment Engagement Team to see if there were any current labour openings available.
Unfortunately, after several trials, Derick had not found the perfect position for him. Jeanne and the atWork Australia team did not give up. They were not going to stop until the perfect position was found for Derick.
“Through all his hardship, Derick, did not give up and neither did I,” said Jeanne.
atWork Australia continued to refer Derick for labouring positions, and soon enough, he was offered a contract position with a concreting company.
“We assisted Derick in gaining everything he needed for his new position. This included his ABN, new work clothes, and equipment he needed to start employment.”
Whilst in employment, atWork Australia was also able to financially support Derick with his taxes by booking appointments with an accountant to ensure he was capturing his finances correctly.
Jeanne is so proud of Derick and his perseverance throughout their time together. She can see the impact that employment has had not just on him and his confidence, but his family too.
