Jacob is 18 years old, has just finished high school in North Brisbane, lives with an intellectual disability, and was ready to start his very first job.
Jacobs loves gaming. He wanted his own income to support his hobby but sometimes found it difficult to understand what was being asked of him and has anxiety around new people.
He came to atWork Australia in Deception Bay for support to find the right role for him. He met with Job Coach Kyla who got to know Jacob and understood his strengths.
“I learned quickly that Jacob is very reliable. He shows up to every appointment on time and has the right, positive attitude to be successful in work,” said Kyla, Job Coach.
“Through his hobby of gaming, he has great attention to detail and likes working towards goals so he can be proud of his achievements.”
Kyla helped Jacob create a resume based on his hobbies and strengths and then went to work to find a supportive employer.
Jacob quickly landed a role as a trolley collector at his local supermarket and is now thriving.
“We helped Jacob purchase work clothes and a work phone, and we spoke with the employer to gain additional support for Jacob.”
Jacob’s support worker joined him for his first few shifts to help with his anxiety and help him understand the requirements of the role.
“After a few shifts, Jacob was comfortable working on his own without the extra support. His employer really appreciates how reliable Jacob is.”
“Jacob is a lovely and polite young man. I’m so happy he is in a job he loves and can support his hobby on his own.”
