atWork Australia Job Coach, Mark, said, “We are incredibly proud of Michael’s resilience and the positive example he sets for others who may be facing similar challenges.”

Disability Employment Services client, Michael, is a mature age Indigenous client. He has recently overcome significant barriers to find employment.

Michael has spent a few years working in Malaysia. When he returned to Australia, due to his health conditions, he has found it difficult to maintain employment. When Michael connected with atWork Australia, he had been unemployed for four years. Michael was beginning to feel discouraged, given his age and health concerns, he was losing confidence in his ability to find work.

When Michael met his Job Coach, Mark, at atWork Australia’s Bonnyrigg office, NSW, he shared that he lives with a spinal disorder which causes chronic back pain and as a result of a stroke he now has difficulty with memory loss.

Michael had a clear short-term goal, he wanted to break the cycle of his everyday routine. His long-term goal is to achieve financial stability. With Job Coach, Mark, by his side, they set out to achieve these goals.

Despite Michael’s barriers he was determined to find employment and start contributing to his community. Mark could see how eager Micheal was to find work and Mark was motivated to support him on this journey.

Mark teamed up with atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Atour, and they both began looking for suitable opportunities.

Soon enough, the team connected with local business owner, Martin. He was impressed by Michael’s determination to return to work, and says if people have the right attitude, he is prepared to give them a go.

In preparation for Michael to start work, the atWork Australia team worked closely with Martin to ensure Michael received the training and support he needed to be successful in his new role.

From this collaboration, Michael has now commenced his new role as a Trolley Collector.

Michael’s story shows that with the right support and having people believe in you, it is possible to overcome barriers to be successful.

“We are incredibly proud of Michael’s resilience and the positive example he sets for others who may be facing similar challenges,” said Job Coach, Mark.

Since starting work, Michael’s mental health has continued to improve, he is more positive and confident in his ability.

“Michael is great, he always gets the work done. I am really happy with him and the support from atWork Australia,” said Martin.
