22-year-old, Workforce Australia client, Connor had an idea about the direction he wanted to take in his career but wasn’t sure about the steps to get there.
He lives with a learning disability and has low confidence in himself.
Connor shared with his Job Coach, Michael, that he had an interest in construction or labouring. His timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
atWork Australia has a relationship with the Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North team and knew of upcoming training for the Heavy Industry Multi Skills (HIMS) program.
The atWork Australia team in the Port Pirie office, thought this would be a great option for Connor, as he would learn a variety of skills in the industry he wanted to work in and the program would build his confidence.
The HIMS program not only offers accredited training but they have prominent employers representing the mining, manufacturing, construction, and engineering industries on board.
After completing the training, Connor now has his forklift licence, white card, Cert II in resources and infrastructure, working safely at heights, welding and working in confined spaces ticket.
To support Connor, the atWork Australia team was also on hand to provide additional coaching if needed. For example, sitting with him while he completed online inductions, or to guide him through paperwork. This full support helped Connor complete his training.
During his course, he was connected to employers, and employed by one of them shortly after completion.
“Connor is grateful to be working in an industry of his choice, and for the extra support to get there.” – Michael, atWork Australia Job Coach.
