22-year-old, Nicholas, had been unemployed for two years when he first started working with atWork Australia in Clarkson, WA.
He didn’t have a driver’s licence, was couch surfing at friends’ houses and had no qualifications. He was ready and willing to work, but just wasn’t sure of the first steps to take.
He explained all of this to his Job Coach, Rose. As a Workforce Australia client, Rose first suggested Nicholas participate in the ‘Ready, set, go’ program to learn the requirements of the program.
From his commitment to this introductory course, Rose could see that Nicholas could be successful in gaining a qualification.
She spoke to him about his career aspirations, and goals and they talked mostly about the construction industry.
“Nicholas was very willing to participate on his employment journey. He just wasn’t sure what steps to take to reach his goals,” said Rose.
Nicholas was then enrolled in a Certificate III in Civil Construction which he successfully completed.
He also started participating in driving lessons, to work towards his goal of gaining his driver’s licence which would open the door to more opportunities in construction.
With a qualification in hand and feeling more confident in his ability to land work, Nicholas attended a ‘First Steps to Success’ event.
The event brings together employers and those looking for work into one location. Here he was able to practice speaking to employers and answering interview questions.
Shortly after, Nicholas landed a role as a Labourer, his first step into the construction industry.
