At 18-years old, Workforce Australia client, Makayla is desperate to break the cycle of generational unemployment within her community. Makayla is a young woman from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. After recently finishing school, she needed support to take the next step into employment.
Makayla had low confidence, low self-belief and a limited understanding of the job market and how to prepare for interviews.
Makayla had previously experienced racial discrimination when looking for work. Additionally, Makayla had limited transport and unstable accommodation.
Despite the challenges ahead of her, Makayla has demonstrated resilience and determination which led her to connect with atWork Australia’s Mount Druitt team.
Once Makayla connected with atWork Australia she was introduce to her Pre-Employment Facilitator, Shameer, who would be guiding her through the next phase of her journey.
The pair met when Makayla was referred to atWork Australia’s Jobs for the Mob (JFTM) program, which supports First Nations people to develop their employability skills to progress towards employment.
The JFTM program has been crucial in Makayla’s development. She has learnt how to develop a professional resume and cover letter that is tailored to the position she is applying for and learnt vital job searching strategies to find positions that match her skill set. Additionally, Makayla and Shameer have practiced mock interviews, giving her the opportunity to develop her ability to effectively communicate her skills in an interview.
Although Makayla has not found the right role for her, her confidence and belief within herself continues to grow. Since coming to atWork Australia she has transformed into a new person. She is now empowered and prepared to continue her employment journey. Makayla will continue to be supported by the atWork Australia team every step of the way.
Makayla’s newfound determination has inspired her family and others within her community. We look forward to celebrating with her when she secures employment.
“I was eager to join the workforce but faced hurdles such as anxiety and financial stress. This program boosted my confidence in job hunting and alleviated my stress. I highly recommend it to others facing similar issues,” said Makayla.
