Good News from atWork Australia. Quote reads: "I feel really good now that I'm working and I'm happy to have a job I enjoy. I have structure and routine throughout my week. I accomplish more tasks, and my motivation grows.”

When Disability Employment Services client, Matthew (Matt), first entered the atWork Australia office in Claymore, NSW, he had very little motivation.

After being unemployed for more than 10 years, Matt no longer received encouraging words about finding employment from his support network. He had also recently moved to the area.  Matt had no idea where to start in his employment journey.

His Job Coach, Ankita, got to know Matt, understanding his personality to learn more about his lack of motivation.

She started him off with some small goals like meeting with the atWork Australia Employer Engagement Consultant, Janine, and attending internal events such as First Steps to Success.

Ankita then helped him obtain his birth certificate for a proof of identity card. Then they discussed attending some training for a white card to open the doors to future employment.

“Slowly and gradually, with each activity he ticked off the list, Matt started building confidence and feeling motivated,” said Ankita.

Ankita continued to encourage Matt and helped him with some phone credit and food vouchers.

They discussed the concept of goal setting, looking at short-term and long-term goals that would further support Matt with his motivation.

His first goal: find work. Then they talked about gaining a promotion, slowly moving towards a management role, and overseas holidays.

Now that Matt could see a clear path, he became more invested in applying for positions, and with the help of Janine, he learnt skills in how to present well in interviews.

Shortly he landed a role as a Trolley Collector with a large supermarket. An employer where he had the opportunity to reach all those goals.

The team celebrated with Matt when he reached four weeks at his new role, and again at 13 weeks.

“We are very proud of Matt for taking the leap and progressing to a three-month milestone and soon six-months with the support of his In-Work Support coach who is regularly checking up with him,” said Ankita.
