Overall, hiring people living with disability not only benefits the individual, but also enriches our company culture and contributes to our long-term success,” said Vivek, owner of VB Store

atWork Australia recently nominated VB Store for the 2024 Disability Employment Australia Prime Super Employer Award which acknowledges an organisation that has exemplified an outstanding commitment to the inclusion of people with a disability in rewarding, open and ongoing employment.

Since working with atWork Australia, VB Store have provided 27 clients, many who live with disability, an opportunity to find meaningful and sustainable employment.

Vivek, owner of the manufacturing and warehouse business said hiring a more diverse workforce has improved their culture.

“Overall, hiring people living with disability not only benefits the individual, but also enriches our company culture and contributes to our long-term success,” said Vivek.

To increase suitability of roles to a broader range of people, including those with a physical disability, VB Store recently invested in the purchase of machinery that supports individuals in the workplace.

“Previously warehousing positions required considerable manual handling which reduced the opportunity for many people,” said atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Irene.

“By purchasing machinery such as new forklifts, VB Store were able to reduce the physical elements of the positions.”

“This not only had the desired effect of opening eligibility up to a broader talent pool, but also increased the long-term sustainability for employees by reducing the wear and tear on their bodies.”

They are also committed to helping people living with disability to maintain long term employment by providing tailored support.

“VB Store hired a client of ours living with a brain tumor,” said Irene.

“They recognised that the person was suitably qualified and able to do the role, but they would need time off to attend medical appointments.”

“VB Store tailored the hours of the role so the person could continue working while managing their health condition.”

Since implementing their diversity and inclusion strategies, VB Store has seen productivity increase due to this tailored, person-centered approach.

This commitment to diversity was one of the main reasons VB Store were named a finalist in the Employer Awards.
