After a series of casual inconsistent jobs, 27-year-old Disability Employment Services client, Tyson, nervously entered the atWork Australia office in Wanniassa, ACT. He was wanting to find a position that worked for him in the long run.
Tyson lives with a spinal disorder, depression, as well as learning difficulties, which has impacted Tyson being able to sustain employment. For assistance with finding tailored, sustainable employment, Tyson was partnered with Job Coach, Trent.
When Trent first met Tyson, he had been out of the workforce for 14 months. His confidence was low, and nerves were high. Tyson sensed this and took time to explain the tailored support on offer, and what he can expect on his employment journey.
In this appointment, Trent got to know Tyson, his employment history, interests, skills and goals so that he could create a job plan that works for him, and his health conditions.
The main pillar of the job plan was to build up Tyson’s confidence in himself, and his ability to perform in the workplace.
“Whilst working on Tyson’s confidence, we were also searching for suitable positions for him,” said Trent.
“We pushed Tyson outside of his comfort zone when looking for work. We knew what he was capable of and were here to remind him of that.”
After applying for several suitable positions, he was offered a position as a Courier Driver.
atWork Australia worked with Tyson, and his family to ensure he had the right supports in place to thrive in his new position.
He spent some time in this role, but he felt like this job was not perfectly suited to him, and his health.
Trent continued to work with Tyson, and reassured Tyson that the perfect position for him was out there, and to take the previous opportunity as a learning, something that he needed to experience to have an understanding on what he is really looking for.
With time and patience, Tyson later landed a position as a Trolley Collector/Cleaner on a part time basis after a very successful interview.
“Based on his current circumstances, this position was ideal for Tyson,” said Trent.
“Tyson has grown in confidence and is now a more independent person.” – Trent, atWork Australia Job Coach.
