Disability Employment Services client, Tye, started working with atWork Australia having recently lost his job due to alcohol addiction and living with mental health concerns. Without employment, Tye was also experiencing unstable accommodation.
Determined to find new employment, Tye was seeking help from family, friends, medical professionals including counselling and community organisations.
He was ready for employment when he met with his Job Coach, Lena, at the atWork Australia offices in Casino, NSW.
Tye worked hard on attending all his appointments which earned him praise from his Job Coach.
“I was so proud of Tye’s initiative. I encouraged him to keep going, attending his meetings, and looking for work,” said Lena.
Soon Tye landed an interview with a local pizza takeaway. After the interview Lena called the employer to offer them a wage subsidy in the hopes of securing the role for Tye.
“Initially they declined the offer as they weren’t sure they could guarantee Tye the hours he needed,” said Lena.
“After two days of working, Tye received a call from the employer asking if they could get the wage subsidy as they’d like to employ Tye permanent part-time for his minimum benchmark hours since he is such a great, reliable, excellent worker and team player.”
Tye did not own a car. He mentioned to Lena he was finding it difficult to get to and from work.
The atWork Australia team supported Tye financially to purchase a pushbike, helmet, and lock, so he could travel safely to and from his new job.
atWork Australia continues to support Tye, encouraging him to attend his medical appointments to manage his barriers and to keep well.
“Despite many challenges, he never gave up and is always respectful, keeps an honest and open conversation and always on time for his appointments,” said Lena.
The team look forward to seeing what Tye can achieve.
