At atWork Australia we help people with disability, mental health condition, illness and injury. We know that no two people are the same and everyone has a unique story.
Jessica, 21, from Goonellabah, approached the atWork Australia office in Lismore with limited work experience. Jessica experienced an unstable home life, she was living between houses and had mental health conditions, and low confidence, affecting her ability to secure work.
Anne, from atWork Australia office in Lismore, was assigned to be Jessica’s Disability Employment Services Job Coach. Anne knew the importance of self-belief and could see all of Jessica’s potential and what she could offer the workplace. Anne empathised with Jessica and together, they got to work finding a great position. Anne was excited to get Jessica into a position perfectly suited to her needs.
Anne supported Jessica’s mental health by signing her up to Headspace services, Anne knew this was important for Jessica to gain self-confidence and help with her mental health. Jessica was then signed up for Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) courses to expand her potential work options, this was all funded by atWork Australia.
Soon after, Jessica landed a retail assistant position. Jessica’s confidence started improving with the support and frequent contact from Anne. Unfortunately, the business in which Jessica was working in unexpectedly closed, which left Jessica without a job.
Anne and Jessica didn’t give up. Jessica was soon employed at her local IGA in Goonellabah in the liquor department, her RSA came to great use for this position! Jessica was now more confident than ever and determined to work more. Jessica had approached a company by herself and asked for work. Anne stated, “that would not have happened when she first commenced with atWork Australia!”.
Jessica is now living with family in Lismore, she is financially secure and happy. Jessica was even able to get off Centrelink payments.
It’s not just Jessica that is happy, her manager, Luke is very happy to have Jessica on his team. Luke manages the 7 days a week IGA supermarket that is also a licensed alcohol sales venue. Luke stated that Jessica is going great and expects her hours to increase.
“I am so happy to be employed and I feel a weight has been lifted off my chest financially. I feel more confident and that I can accomplish more. I now have more opportunities for the future” said Jessica.
Anne is overjoyed when she thinks about Jessica’s time with atWork Australia. “Jessica has come a long way since she first came to atWork Australia and I am very proud of her progress”
