Considering a role as a Wellness Advisor? Hear what Kathleen from atWork Australia has to say.

“I think it’s a real privilege. I really really love my job and I love that I get to talk to people without the mask on.

They come in and they trust me with their the deepest parts of themselves and I want to work out how I can set them up for success. I feel like we’re working together as a team in this and I just feel like it’s a beautiful thing to see someone go from their Rock Bottom to feeling more confident in themselves, or reducing their anxiety or working on something that they found highly traumatising.

It cuts back barriers that were stopping them getting their dream job or getting back into the workforce.”

What do you like about practicing psychology in this industry?

“Something that I really love is that it’s an opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team. I really enjoy getting to use my area of expertise, psychology, with Job Coaches and their area of expertise. Together we work in collaboration as a team and we come from different backgrounds but what we’re doing is, we want the same outcome for the client, and I kind of enjoy that we’re using different skills to help them get there.

There’s so much that Job Coaches do that are so important to helping the client. As a Provisional Psychologist I’m trying to give the Job Coach that extra bit of support in working out what the client might really need help with, that the Job Coach might not always have access to knowing about. A client might have a lot of stuff that they want to keep really private which is absolutely fair enough.”

What’s your personal approach with clients!

“When I see clients for the first time I always start by saying to them you’re the expert in yourself so you know yourself best and I’m the expert in Psychology and we’re going to use our skills together as a team to work out where you want to get to, what goals you want to work towards, what sort of life you want to create for yourself. They’re going to use both our skills here as a team and using this type of language I feel like it gives the client a sense of empowerment and it also helps them feel like they’re not alone in this they’ve got that extra person there who wants to support them and wants to help them get to wherever it is that they want to get to.”
