Here are a few suggestions for each stage of the recruitment process to champion diversity.

Placing the advertisement.

  • Avoid PDF attachments – they are difficult for screen readers
  • Include a contact person and phone number for questions
  • Ask the preferred method of contact and contact the candidate using this method

Booking the interview.

  • Provide details about the accessibility and be flexible on times
  • Set expectations – online or in person, and how many people will be present
  • Ask if any adjustments need to be made such as Auslan interpreter

At the interview.

  • Ask if a break is needed during a long interview
  • Check the lighting is suited to someone with sensory issues or those with impaired vision
  • Ask common questions, focus on essential skills and abilities to do the job
