Finding the right person for the right role can sometimes take months. For Bairnsdale resident, Sharni, it took nearly four years, but her perseverance never wavered.
The bubbly 26-year-old had held paid roles previously but for various business reasons they didn’t last more than around three months
Sharni lives with an intellectual disability that requires support from any potential employer. Experienced atWork Australia Job Coach, Belinda, knows that sometimes it can be hard to find an employer who will provide that ongoing support.
Belinda arranged for Sharni to complete a Job Ready course through a local community centre to help her gain confidence and the skills to assist with her job search. There she learnt how to write her résumé, how to answer questions in an interview and how to dress appropriately.
She was very excited to be taken shopping for an interview outfit.
“I loved trying on the clothes,” Sharni says. “The people were really friendly and helpful.”
Now that Sharni was ready for work, Belinda knew of a local café who were always open to giving people with disability a go. She contacted Old Station Café partners, Simon and Michelle, who are heavily involved in the local East Gippsland community, and they were more than happy to welcome Sharni with open arms.
Sharni was overjoyed at the news she was successful in getting the role and couldn’t wait to start her new job.
Simon and Michelle made Sharni’s transition into employment a smooth process, making sure everything is ready for her.
Sharni is very happy to have found an employer who won’t ‘let her go’. She has been working at the café for six months now and has stable, ongoing employment for the first time in her life.
Sharni says, “I love it. I love everything about it. I love giving everyone a smile when I give them their coffee and food.”
