Meet Taylah, a First Nations Workforce Australia client who wants to create a better future for herself, and her children.
For assistance in obtaining her first ever job, Taylah contacted atWork Australia in Penrith, NSW.
Upon entering the office, and connecting with her Job Coach, Adrian, she shared her barriers and concerns about entering the workforce.
She shared her history of drug and alcohol dependence, mental health struggles as well as living with a learning disability. She was anxious, and unmotivated, this was noticed by Adrian.
As a key first step on her journey, she was referred into the Jobs for the Mob program run by atWork Australia.
The program provides culturally specific training for indigenous people searching for work. She was also connected with her Indigenous Connections Mentor, Kathleen, for further culturally specific support.
It was in this course that she met, Pre-Employment Facilitator, Shameer.
“This program became a turning point for Taylah. She developed essential soft skills, including resume writing, interview preparation and communication techniques, which built her confidence and motivated her to take control of her future,” said Shameer.
“The tailored approach to rebuilding confidence, coupled with the practical skills and resources provided, allowed Taylah to see possibilities in her career that she hadn’t considered before.”
“The cultural focus also resonated with her, making her feel connected and supported in a way other programs cannot.”
The combination of the support from Adrian, Kathleen and Shameer, were the foundation of her confidence, and motivation that she is now utilising in finding employment.
Post-course, she has been applying to various roles and continues to engage with her Job Coach and Indigenous Connections Mentor regularly. She remains committed to finding employment and has expanded her job search to different sectors.
“Jobs for the Mob has helped me with my confidence and motivation on getting a stable job. Thank you, Shameer.” – Taylah, Workforce Australia client.
