Aaron, Disability Employment Services client, entered the doors of atWork Australia in Geelong, Victoria, when he needed help the most. Aaron was no longer able to effectively complete his duties as a Customer Service Advisor at a large health insurance provider, due to his epilepsy and was having frequent days off as a result.
Aaron wished to stay with his current employer and continue to full time employment, but this was causing reoccurring seizures. He was torn between his desire to work as hard as possible and having reoccurring seizures at his workplace.
Unsure what to do, he met with Job Coach, Kay, and outlined his situation. Aaron decided it was in his best interest to make the next step in his employment journey and find a new position with a supportive employer.
Within his initial appointment, Kay and Aaron spoke about his employment past and what he wants his future position to look like, as well as any other important information. He outlined that due to his condition, he was unable to drive a car or obtain his license so, it was critical that the workplace was nearby or accessible easily via public transportation.
Aaron’s agreed benchmark hours were 23 hours per week, after trying to achieve these hours in the past, he recognised that he will not be able to maintain these hours long-term. The pair decided that 15 hours was much more sustainable goal, and they would work towards this instead.
In following appointments, the pair worked on updating his resume and cover letter to ensure he was putting his best foot forward for potential employers.
Kay and Employer Engagement Consultant, Margaret, worked together to find a workplace that would ensure that Aaron was at less risk of an epileptic seizure. They also assisted Aaron to fill in all the necessary documentation to prove that his benchmark hours should be reconsidered. At the same time, Margaret worked on marketing Aaron to potential employers as she could see the benefits that Aaron could bring to any workplace.
Margaret found a position that ticked all the boxes for Aaron and required 15 hours of week a week. After a discussion with Aaron, Margaret and Kay put his resume forward for the position. With great success, he was offered the position.
Margaret, Kay and the Geelong atWork Australia team assisted Aaron financially with obtaining all the pre-employment checks and any clothing he needed for his new job.
One year later, Aaron is thoroughly enjoying his work. He enjoys working with a supportive employer who understands his barriers and will cater for them. Aaron now has more time in his life to focus on his health and his loved ones.
“Aaron’s resilience in finding a job is admirable, he has consistently pushed forward despite the barriers he has faced along his job seeking journey. Aaron has been a fantastic client to work with and I hope he continues to achieve greatness.” – Kay, Job Coach
