Moving from school into work is a big step for many young people. Recent research has shown only half of young people feel confident in achieving their current or future career aspirations. For those living with disability, it can feel even more daunting.
In New South Wales, atWork Australia has participated in several school-based job expos aimed at supporting youth living with disability to understand what support is available once they finish school.
In July, the team attended the ‘Future in Focus’ event at Port Hacking High School, where 30 students were supported to understand how Disability Employment Services could support them reach their employment goals.
“The event was a great opportunity to interact with students closely. We explained what we do and answered any questions the students had,” said atWork Australia’s Regional Manager, Justin McGinty.
Also in Sydney, the team are working closely with the Support Teacher Transition team for seven schools including Seven Hills, Doonside, The Ponds, Chifley College Senior Campus and Wyndham College, to deliver life skills focused on employment.
Many of our youth clients are living with anxiety and lack confidence when it comes to marketing themselves to employers. atWork Australia work with our clients to find a path that is right for them, such as with Lily (pictured) taking small manageable steps into employment.
We can also support clients to identify a career path that works with their strengths and abilities. 17-year-old client, Sarah lives with ADHD and a chronic pain condition. With low literacy and numeracy skills, she wasn’t sure what type of jobs might suit her. atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services team supported Sarah to identify a role that was right for her and supported her with relocation costs so she could move closer to work.
“Sarah is really enjoying her new job and new start. She has stepped out of her comfort zone to find employment she enjoys,” said Job Coach Tanjah.
The next school aged expo the atWork Australia team will be attending is the School age & Post-School Pathways Disability Expo at the Mittagong RSL club on September 2.
