Mohamad migrated from Lebanon to Australia in 2018 to search for better job opportunities, due to Lebanon’s tough economic and political conditions.
Married, with two children, Mohamad had worked in government roles in Lebanon and spoke fluent English, however, he struggled to find work in Australia.
When he met with Workforce Australia Job Coach, Amal, in Riverwood, New South Wales, his unemployment was affecting him financially, emotionally, and creating tension with his family.
His main barrier to employment was his lack of local experience, he also didn’t have knowledge about fair work, penalty rates or award wages, leaving him open to be exploited by employers.
“Mohamad said he found work in a grocery store, but they paid him a very low hourly rate. At another job he was promised training to become a furniture assembler, but instead had to haul furniture up and down stairs daily,” said Amal.
“Another role he worked seven days a week, often for long hours and without penalty rates.”
Amal initially started working with Mohamad by teaching him about working in Australia, such as fair work and what his entitlements are, so he could no longer be exploited.
Together, they worked on updating his resume to highlight his strengths. He began completing courses to upskill, including gaining a forklift ticket. Mohamad was feeling more confident and motivated to find good work.
Mohamad gained a few interviews with potential employers, and while he was unsuccessful, the interviews proved good practice. So, when an opportunity became available at the local service centre, Mohamad was confident speaking about his skills and strengths.
atWork Australia’s Job Coach, Isabel, has a good relationship with the local service centre and suggested to them that Amal could be a good fit for a role they had available. He was successful in landing the role.
Amal and atWork Australia supported Mohamad to purchase the shoes and clothing he would need for his new role.
He is now about to start a new role with them as the assistant manager.
Mohamad described his journey with atWork Australia as a valuable experience.
“I was able to find the help and support I needed to find employment,” said Mohamad.
“Before finding work, Mohamad was anxious about what the future holds, now his family is feeling safe and secure, and he is looking forward to supporting his family to achieve their dreams,” said Amal, atWork Australia Job Coach.
