A back injury meant that Disability Services Employment client, Blair 31, needed to change course when it came to his career.
Suddenly being out of work, and unsure about what kind of new employment might be an option for him, he found his mental health beginning to decline.
When Blair was connected with Job Coach, Khala at the Ballarat atWork Australia office, in Victoria, he was still learning how to manage his injury.
“When I first met Blair, it was via a phone call,” said Khala. “But I could tell that even with the setbacks, he was determined to find employment.”
Together they looked at his goals, skills, and types of roles he might be interested in that would work with his injury. We linked Blair with Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative for additional support. All the while letting him know that we were also here to help him.
When he felt he had his health under control, atWork Australia supported him to complete a Traffic Control course, something that had interested him in previous conversations.
After the course, Blair felt Traffic Control might not be for him, participating in the training gave him another confidence boost and he continued to look for suitable roles.
An additional barrier was his car needed repairs to be registered, so atWork Australia supported him with his car maintenance, to provide even greater employment opportunities.
Soon Blair landed an interview as a delivery driver and laundry attendant.
“Our key strategies to help Blair was to support him and to let him know that we are here to help him and make him feel comfortable to work with us,” said Khala.
“We assisted with work clothing so that he could start his new job. Mainly we supported him through encouragement to help him to get back into work and to feel confident.”
Employment has given Blair a new self-belief. Employment is one of Blairs goals, which he has been able to reach. His new income will support him to tick off a few other goals he had on his list.
“Being employed has made a great impact on my mental health,” said Blair, atWork Australia Client.
