Stephen can now move forward with his life with a job and newfound optimism after being long-term unemployed and feeling like he was in a never-ending holding pattern.
A resident of south-west of Sydney, Stephen, hadn’t worked for six years by the time he approached atWork Australia’s Bankstown office towards the end of 2018. His last job had been as a car detailer, but a disability meant he was unable to continue in the role for long.
Gaurav, his Job Coach for the past year, said Stephen was unmotivated when they met.
Gaurav got started delivering the services Stephen needed straight away. Together they looked at Stephen’s situation, with Gaurav listening and helping him focus on his needs and strengths so they could set out employment goals that were right for him.
Stephen needed to polish his computer skills, so Guarav taught him how to use the internet, email, messages, and Microsoft Office. By this time Stephen’s motivation levels were rising and he was beginning to believe in himself more. They then moved on to applying for jobs and practising interview techniques.
With a goal to find work in the courier or truck driving industries, Stephen was upbeat when asked to interview for a part-time delivery driver position. This role would bring in an income without straining his health. When Gaurav broke the good news that he had the job, Stephen was truly grateful and relieved.
“I want to thank Gaurav and atWork Australia for taking an interest in my life and being the supportive team, I needed to move forward,” he said.
