23-year-old Zoe came into the atWork Australia Rosewater office in South Australia, as a Workforce Australia client, looking to gain motivation for employment. Due to Zoe’s anxiety, it meant she was unable to motivate herself to find work.
Zoe hadn’t completed any further education since finishing high school, other than commencing a Certificate III in Retail. However, she had not completed this due to her anxiety about the placement component. Living with anxiety, Zoe’s employment experience was limited to pamphlet deliveries in 2017 and order picking in 2019.
Enter Job Coach, Melissa. Providing support, encouragement and understanding, she got to know Zoe and knew that by giving her small and manageable goals, Zoe began making her own choices and taking steps to gain employment.
Melissa began by encouraging Zoe to attend her appointments autonomously instead of with her mum, who acted as her support person. This ensured Zoe was taking ownership of her decisions.
Whenever Zoe was unable to make decisions on her own during appointments, Melissa would provide all information for consideration at home and ask that she come to her next appointment with a decision.
Melissa utilised a Work for the Dole host to get Zoe into volunteering at the Salvation Army. This allowed her to gain experience and complete the placement component as part of her Certificate III in Retail course. Upon completing placement and the Certificate in full, it then lead to an opportunity for a paid position at the Salvation Army.
“I had a lot of anxiety with social interaction and my confidence wasn’t great. But now that I have gotten out there, I feel a lot better about myself and what I can do.” – Zoe, Workforce Australia client.
