Simon always had dreams of becoming a butcher. He had completed all his training and was working as a butcher in the local supermarket.
Then Simon’s health deteriorated due to a back injury, and he experienced a poor workplace culture. With all of this, Simon’s mental health was impacted.
Simon started working with atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services office in Eureka, Victoria, for support to return to work.
He wanted to go back to butchering but wanted to make sure he didn’t return to a workplace with a negative culture. He also wasn’t sure what he could manage with his back injury.
He began working with Job Coach, Khala, for support to return to work.
“Simon was hesitant to return to work because of his past experiences,” said Khala.
Khala got to know Simon and when she heard about his goals and history, she started calling local employers she knew were supportive.
“I reverse marketed Simon to the Ballarat Meat Company, and he was successful in landing a role.”
The atWork Australia team financially supported Simon to purchase the tools and equipment he needed to start work.
She also offered Simon support with physio so he could make sure his health wasn’t impacted by returning to work.
“We started Simon off on just a few hours a week to see how he would go. I then worked with Simon to help increase his hours. Supporting him throughout the process and working with him to help build his confidence back up,” said Khala.
“I’ve seen Simon’s outlook and perspective on work greatly change now he is in a supportive work environment.”
For Simon, it means that he has been able to return to work in an industry he loves, knowing he has the right support behind him.
“To me, it means that I have the support behind me and know that I can go to my Job Coach for any assistance,” said Simon.
atWork Australia looks forward to celebrating Simon’s next employment milestone with him.
