Workforce Australia client, Sharon, came to atWork Australia’s Riverwood, NSW, office for support to return to the workplace.
At 53-years-old, Sharon had spent the majority of her life caring for and raising her children. Now her children are grown up, it’s time for Sharon to finally do something for herself.
Sharon is an Indigenous woman. She is very caring, strong, and takes enormous pride in whatever she does.
When connecting with atWork Australia, Sharon was ready to take the next step on her employment journey. It just happened, that in the background, the perfect opportunity was being created.
Coles Express (Viva Retail Energy) Regional Manager, Allan, reached out to atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Isabel, to discuss their 2024 Indigenous strategy plan.
After this discussion, Isabel organised a group information session for atWork Australia’s Indigenous clients to learn more about the opportunities on offer.
Sharon was one of the atWork Australia clients who attended the information session. She was excited about this opportunity, and with the support of the atWork Australia team, she put her application forward.
She was successful in securing an interview. Given it had been a long period of time since she had an interview, she was a little nervous. Sharon was supported by Indigenous Connections Mentor, Philip, who worked with her to build her confidence. Philip also attended the interview with Sharon for moral support.

Sharon has said she is enjoying her new job. She loves her colleagues and is building wonderful relationships with her managers.
There were a few learning curves along the way, but Sharon has taken each challenge in her stride.
Sharon looks forward to her journey ahead with Coles Express (Viva Retail Energy) and hopes to progress into a leadership position in the future.
