Sometimes the transition out of school to work can be daunting. Money, independence and achieving goals are some of the benefits of getting a job when finishing school.
Crookwell local Alexander, 19, lives with autism and an intellectual disability. Alexander had no employment history and was unsure if he was able to find a job.
Alexander first met his Job Coach Mark at the atWork Australia Goulburn office in his final year of school (year 12). Mark’s main challenge was to improve Alexander’s confidence and prove to his parents that a Disability Employment Service provider could support Alexander with his career path.
Mark worked with him on his resume and passed it on to local employers. Mark highlighted that his neurodiverse condition, Autism, would be a positive trait for the role as autism is often associated with high levels of attention to detail.
Alexander successfully started a full-time position as a Store Assistant in a local grocery store. Alexander’s transition from school to employment was seamless. He was the perfect fit for the store, which has close ties to the local community.
Alexander was very pleased with his first job after school and was excited to have the freedom of earning his own income.
Felicity, Alexander’s manager at the local supermarket says: “Alex is a reliable employee and an asset to the team.”
Mark says: “From the first day, I have met Alex, it has been nothing but a positive experience.”
