After more than two decades unemployed, Workforce Australia client, Ross, has begun taking positive steps on his employment journey.
When Ross first connected with the team in Invermay, Tasmania, he was very reluctant to engage and would often request to move his appointments. Eventually, when he started attending his appointments, he was closed off, abrupt with his communication and it seemed as though he could not get out of the office quick enough.
At each appointment, Job Coaches, worked hard to build a connection with Ross. It was a slow process, but they began to gain his trust. Ross started to share small parts of his past with Job Coach Renai, including that he has experienced grief, trauma and he experiences anxiety.
Due to having such a long period of unemployment, Ross had limited skills, qualifications and no relevant work experience, which further impacted his ability to find employment.
As Renai and Ross began to develop a plan for how Ross could return to work, Renai reassured him that atWork Australia would support him every step of the way.
Given Ross’s limited experience, Renai suggested they begin by enrolling him in a short course to help build his confidence and have a qualification to put on his resume.
Although Ross was hesitant, he agreed and committed to improving his employability skills. With Renai by his side, Ross enrolled into a Café Skills – Accelerator Program. Throughout the five-day course, Ross gained valuable new skills, completing units on hygiene practices for food safety and customer engagement.
Attending this course has boosted Ross’s confidence and desire to continue developing his skills.
Over a few short weeks, Ross’s enthusiasm and willingness to engage with his Job Coach has completely changed. He now happily attends his appointments and is starting to have open conversations about his employment future.
After completing his course, Ross has received glowing feedback from the course facilitator. He now has a much more positive outlook for the future.
“I am absolutely blown away by the progress Ross has made in such a short time. He has gone from being withdrawn, non-engaging and sometimes abrupt, to a friendly, polite client that is eager to gain as many skills as possible,” said Renai.
“I am so proud to see Ross coming out of his shell, embracing opportunities that can help build his confidence and gaining skills that will help him re-enter the workforce.”
