Jennifer has a new job in retail with a supportive employer and her life is back on track after being put on halt by an injury.
The Perth resident looked to atWork Australia’s Mirrabooka office for help after an injury forced her to leave her job of 20 years. It had been so long since she’d had to put herself out into the marketplace that she was struggling with knowing how to begin her job search.
Cyndy, her Disability Employment Services Job Coach, said Jennifer was worried about her prospects and was in a fairly negative frame of mind.
“She’d lost all confidence, had anxiety and really needed some support and guidance,” she said.
Working alongside colleague Nikita, an Employer Engagement Consultant, Cyndy met with Jennifer once a fortnight. Together the trio mapped out a job plan that matched Jennifer’s lifestyle, skills and abilities.
As the weeks went by Jennifer brightened up, knowing that each appointment brought her a step closer to a new job. It wasn’t long before she was arriving at appointments with a smile on her face.
Several interviews later Jennifer was delighted to hear she’d been offered a full-time job in a gift shop in Dianella, a suburb only a few minutes’ drive away. She would also be fully trained by the owner, Cathy, in sales and merchandising, Jennifer says she is “so happy” she came to atWork Australia.
“Cyndy and Nikita are extremely supportive, understanding and helpful,” she said.
“They made me feel heard and supported in every way possible.”
After a few weeks in the job, Jennifer’s boss has plenty of praise for her new recruit.
“She’s fantastic! Jennifer’s good with merchandising, well-presented and happy to stay back to help if needed. I’m really happy with her,” Cathy said.
