Workforce Australia client, Meivann, originally from Cambodia, is a principal carer parent to young children. She was connected to atWork Australia in Salisbury for support to find employment.
Meivann needed work as soon as possible. She needed the financial support for her young family.
“She needed to gain employment to help support her household while her long-term goal is to work within a role that she can still have time to be a hands-on parent to her youngest,” said Meivann’s Job Coach, Shaylee.
Meivann has limited English skills and required an interpreter for her first appointment.
To support Meivann to reach her goals, Shaylee suggested she reach out to her networks to see if anyone knew of any business who may be hiring.
Shaylee also looked into local businesses to see if any local employers might also have a Cambodian background.
“Meivann had not considered this approach as a way to find employment,” said Shaylee.
Within two months, Meivann had gained meaningful employment with a local bakery, owned by someone who can speak the same language as Meivann.
The job allowed Meivann to understand instructions through a familiar language and allows her to financially support her family.
“This job brings Meivann joy to be contributing to her families’ finances but also a purpose outside of her parenting responsibilities,” said Shaylee.
“Working has helped my family,” said Meivann.
