atWork Australia client Rachael is a proud mother of two and lives with an intellectual disability.
One day, Rachael arrived at the atWork Australia Liverpool (NSW) office appearing quite upset. When staff consoled her, she revealed that the banks had said that they would repossess her house if she didn’t provide enough money to honour the mortgage repayments. Rachael needed a job, and fast.
However, Rachael felt that her barriers impacted on her chances of gaining employment and the only job she had at that time, was a cleaning role that she did several years before.
Regardless, Rachael was so eager to find employment that she began walking from shop to shop to see if any employers would want her help. atWork Australia Service Manager Frances felt instantly compelled to get on board and help Rachael cold call businesses.
Frances said, “We unfortunately had a lot of knockbacks but in the end, through being persistent, motivated and determined, we ended up achieving the desired goal of gaining suitable employment.”
It was through local Employer Engagement Consultant, Roger and his connections to a local McDonalds restaurant that Rachael was successful in securing the role of Crew Member. Despite this being through the time of COVID-19 lockdown, Rachael has been able to sustain her employment and hours. She said that she is thoroughly enjoying the role.
atWork Australia staff assisted Rachael with resume writing, interview training, transportation and once she got the job, work clothing, Post Placement Support and general motivation and encouragement.
When asked how she felt about getting the job, Rachael said, “Very good and I am very happy with the service and people. atWork Australia put a smile on my face. atWork Australia are like my second family.”
Service Manager Frances said that she was also very happy and referred to her employment as, “A sigh of relief to help her with her financial difficulties with the banks wanting to repossess her family home.”
Frances continued, “Rachael really pulled a heart string for me as I could see how much she was stressing and wanting any employment to provide for her family and hold onto their family home. It was such a great feeling to see Rachael’s face light up when she was told “you got the job!””
