19-year-old Alicia lives in the small town of Peterborough in South Australia.
She had little work experience when she was connected with the atWork Australia team for support in finding work.
atWork Australia’s Job Coach, Chantelle, referred Alicia to the Local Jobs Program to help build her skills and experience in a workplace. The Workforce Australia Local Jobs Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, to help with long-term labour shortages, the impact of COVID-19 on the local economy and job prospects for unemployed locals.
The Local Jobs Program is run by the Peterborough Community Enterprises group who have opened the first bakery in the town in 15 years.
For eight weeks, clients are mentored and learn baking, customer service skills, food handling skills and more.
“Alicia was very keen to participate in the program. She learnt back of house skills, OH&S standards and food hygiene,” said Chantelle.
After completing the Local Jobs Program, Alicia took a massive step and decided to move to Port Pirie with her mother for further work opportunities.
“Alicia was able to secure employment before moving at a local football club. When she arrived, the employer was so happy with her work ethic they offered her an apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery,” said Chantelle.
Alicia said the Local Jobs Program helped her to increase her employability by giving her skills in the hospitality sector. She was also grateful to know that atWork Australia will continue to support her during her first role.
“I feel so supported in my decision to move knowing atWork Australia will be there to support me, including making sure I have everything I need for my job,” said Alicia.
atWork Australia has supported Alicia to purchase her new work uniform and the team is looking forward to seeing Alicia thrive in her new apprenticeship.
