59-year-old, Chris, rarely had to use a computer or a mobile phone before he found himself out of work. He was surprised to realise how essential technology was for job searching and applying for jobs.
Christopher had worked fitting tyres but an injury meant he had to change careers. When he came to the Disability Employment Services office at atWork Australia in Edgeworth, NSW, he was finding it tricky to even use his own phone.
“Chris’s experience was all based in roles that were very physical and he worried that he would struggle with upskilling due to his lack of technological skill,” said his Job Coach, Kylie.
“I worked with Chris to explore work that he could do with less physical strain on his body. An opportunity to do a traffic control course was presented and Chris was eager.”
Chris needed our support to overcome barriers with technology, including writing a resume, sending applications, signing up for his course, and inductions.
“All these seemingly simple tasks presented a large barrier to someone who doesn’t have, or know how, to operate a computer,” said Kylie.
“I took Chris shopping for interview clothing and shoes, and helped him set up his new phone, running through how to operate it.”
At each step, working with Kylie and the atWork Australia team, Chris found himself becoming more and more confident. He was coming into the atWork Australia offices to use our client computer, so we were on hand to assist with anything he needed.
atWork Australia supported Chris to obtain his traffic control qualifications, police check, and workers on foot ticket.
Chris was successful in landing a role but became nervous when he found out the staffing systems and bookings for jobs would be on his phone.
But through atWork Australia’s In-Work support, we were able to continue to support Chris in his new role.
“I assured Chris we would be there to help him, and the support wouldn’t stop just because he had found a job. We would keep supporting him to make sure he would succeed in his new role.”
atWork Australia also supported Chris financially to get to and from work for those first few weeks, while he waited for his first pay to come through.
“I’m proud of how far Chris has come. I look forward to seeing what he achieves in his new role.”
