For over forty years, Eric had worked as a qualified electrician in first the construction industry, and then for the railways. But crippling Osteoarthritis and Carpel Tunnel Syndrome led to Eric being unable to work in the industry he loved.
Eric turned to atWork Australia in Bendigo and was introduced to Disability Employment Services Job Coach, Pam.
Pam worked with Eric every two weeks, over a period of time, looking for employment and researching jobs which Eric would be able to do with his health barriers.
Pam knew Eric needed work that wasn’t physically difficult for his hands and together the two decided that the security industry would be a great option.
Pam enrolled Eric at the International Security Training academy in Melbourne and made all the arrangements for Eric to get there and complete the course, supporting him financially for the journey. Eric successfully completed the course and was on his way to a new career.
Along with the certificate, Eric needed to complete a medical and physical examination to make sure he was fit for the position, as well as complete a Police check including finger printing and apply for a security licence.
With all the checks and licences in place, Eric successfully applied for a position as a security guard for the local county courts.
Pam says, “Eric was a pleasure to work with. He was incredibly grateful for the support of atWork Australia and he has now been working for over three months and loving it.”
Eric is enjoying the part time work so much he is actively seeking more hours with his employer.
atWork Australia will continue to support Eric in his new role for as long as he needs it, but with the goals he is kicking, it won’t be for long.
