atWork Australia understands how vital it is that we collaborate with key community networks so that our clients can receive the best support on their journey into employment.
We are thrilled to partner with the STEPS CHARITY NDIS Café in Tewantin on the Sunshine Coast, to support our client, Nathan, who is autistic, into workplace training.
Disability Employment Services client, Nathan, joined atWork Australia in October 2022. He entered the Tewantin office shy and unsure of where he wanted to begin his career.
With a passion for cooking and often bringing in treats for the office staff to enjoy, Job Coach, Connor, suggested hospitality. With the office hosting a morning tea in November, Connor asked if he would like him to showcase his skills and bake for the event. He agreed. Nathan was also invited to attend the event.
Manager, Telisha, invited local employer, STEP NDIS Café to attend this event, in hopes to introduce Nathan. Mick, Business Development Officer of STEPS was attending the morning tea and was looking forward to meeting Nathan.
After a conversation with Nathan, and tasting his delicious treats, Mick was interested in finding a placement for Nathan at the Café.
atWork Australia developed a tailored learning plan for Nathan to join the STEPS Café and begin his career path into hospitality. This plan catered to Nathan requiring one-on-one support, demonstration and visual learning when completing new tasks.
After a successful onboarding process, Nathan has been working at the café for eight weeks.
During this time, Mick mentioned that, “Nathan is serving customers independently using the point-of-sale system, making coffees and is able to cook and prepare various foods.”
All these skills will play an important role as he moves into future employment.
“I have really enjoyed my time learning at the café, I have had so much help from the staff from atWork Australia. I feel privileged to receive the support I have. I love coming to the Café and I enjoy cooking which is what I love to do!” – Nathan, Client.
Nathan has now progressed to attending interviews, set-up through our employer relationships outside of the café, and is well on his way to the next step – securing employment. Telisha states “We could not be happier to see how confident Nathan has become through this collaborative approach with the STEPS NDIS Café. I am proud of how far he has come in his journey with us.”
We look forward to supporting Nathan into meaningful and sustainable employment in the future.
