Workforce Australia client, Michael, had always been a hard worker and employed his whole life. However, he has recently been grieving the loss of friends and family from within his close circle. The grief Michael was experiencing was severely impacting on his mental health, and his ability to work and provide for his family.
In an attempt to return to work, Michael connected with atWork Australia team in Northam, Western Australia.
When Michael met his Job Coach, Chelsea, he spoke about the loss of his loved ones and shared that his social anxiety was making it incredibly difficult for him to return to the workforce. As a first step, Chelsea wanted to provide Michael with professional support to help manage his grief. Chelsea referred Michael to atWork Australia’s Wellness Services, where he would have the opportunity to speak with a professional Wellness Advisor.
Over the next few months, Chelsea continuously worked on building a relationship with Michael. Over this time Chelsea could see major changes in Michael’s attitude and willingness to be open towards returning to work.
“I helped Michael to build his confidence, I always reminded him of what he is capable of and that he will make it. I told him it was never a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” said Chelsea.
Chelsea slowly encouraged Michael to take small steps outside of his comfort zone. She challenged him to print out his resume and deliver it in person to potential employers.
At Michaels fortnightly appointment, Chelsea printed his resume and asked him to take it to a local car yard where she had seen they were advertising a position. Michael took the advice and approached the employer.
When Michael first came to atWork Australia he would not have had the confidence to walk in and hand his resume to an employer. Now, after continuously working on his confidence and wellbeing with his Job Coach and Wellness Advisor, Michael confidently introduced himself to the employer. He was invited for an interview and offered a job on the spot.
Returning to work has done wanders for Michael’s wellbeing. His self-confidence and overall motivation for life continues to grow. Michael expressed; he finally feels like the provider he once was for his family.
“I am a new person. I am very grateful for the help I have received,” said Michael.
