24-year-old, Melissa came into the Auburn atWork Australia office with a positive mindset and ready to work.
Being young with limited work experience, Melissa was unsure which direction she wanted to take with her career.
She also lives with a medical condition which impacted her ability to concentrate.
Melissa shared with her Workforce Australia Job Coach, Alex, that she needed support with the first steps into a career.
She knew she didn’t want a ‘desk job’ but the choices were overwhelming.
Alex suggested Melissa start to complete some work-related certificates for manual jobs. atWork Australia supported her to complete a forklift and traffic control course.
Being born overseas in Turkey, Melissa also felt she would benefit from support with her English language skills and digital literacy skills.
While she completed this training, Melissa and Job Coach, Alex, worked closely together, forming a relationship based on encouragement and trust.
Alex encouraged Melissa and helped keep her on track when her concentration dropped during her job search.
Melissa was interested in pursuing traffic control, and the atWork Australia team supported her with applications.
They purchased personal protective equipment for her including her high visibility work uniform. They helped her attend interviews through fuel vouchers.
When she landed work as in traffic control, they also discussed energy conservation strategies such as standing for long hours outdoors, how to cope with weather changes and ways to keep her concentration up during the day such as making use of her rest breaks.
“I feel like my Job Coach really tried to understand my barriers and struggle in my journey to find suitable employment,” said Melissa.
“I feel listened to and cared about every time; My self-confidence and employability have definitely grown with the support from atWork Australia.”
