Meet Bega Job Coach, Katy. Katy is passionate about helping her clients thrive at work.
As an atWork Australia Job Coach, she helps her clients get the support they need to enter, and maintain, employment. This may include resume support, financial support and upskilling to get their dream job.
“I enjoy talking to people and discussing their goals. I particularly like when people are pleasantly surprised that they are being treated like a person and listened to, not just another number,” said Katy.
Throughout her life, Katy has worked within a variety of different positions including working at supermarkets, bookshops, agriculture supply stores, dairy farms, an animal park, and as a machine operator in a Cheese factory.
Her unique working background allows her to apply her knowledge to all her clients. She understands what skills and traits are needed, and how they can stand out amongst other applicants.
When reflecting on her career, and all the clients she has supported, one client in particular stands out.
This client is autistic and shy. They always attended their appointments with their mother, who did all the talking on their behalf.
“With this client, I was persistent and ensured I got to know them, allowing them to feel comfortable and accepted within appointments,” said Katy.
“Due to my perseverance, with time the client begun speaking for themself!”
After this client landed a volunteer position at a men’s shed to gain experience and confidence, Katy visited them within the workplace and was amazed. The client had a keen interest in the tools and ensured that they were clean and worked efficiently.
“They had created a spreadsheet filled with information on each power tool, where and when it was purchased or donated, warranty if any and replacement value.”
As a result of this, Katy is now looking at getting them an apprenticeship to become an automotive parts interpreter.
