Suffering a work-related knee injury when your young and fit can be debilitating, but Matthew, now 35, persevered and has found a pathway forward.
His knee injury and consequential return to work claim had prevented Matthew from working for over two years. This coincided with the Covid-19 outbreak which had a further impact on his mental wellbeing.
Matthew, from Wyee in NSW, had previously used the services of atWork Australia’s Morisset office and knew, from experience, that they would be able to offer him assistance with finding suitable work.
Meeting regularly with Job Coach, Tara, Matthew indicated that he wanted to be able to return to the mines, a job he had done previously and really loved, but his injury was preventing him doing so.
Early on, the knee injury and associated rehabilitation impacted Matthew’s ability to find work and attend interviews, and personal issues were impeding his motivation.
Tara then focussed on Matthew’s hobby of boat building as a way to keep him active, and to use as a pathway to further work. By Matt exploring this as a job option while continuing to rehabilitate his knee, he could keep most of his current trade skills functional.
“Matthew ensured he kept up with his assembly knowledge, even while not working, so that he was still practicing his skills and knowledge through building and fixing up boats. He was able to use this experience to build upon his work capacity,” she says.
Tara, along with In-Work Support Coach, Sarah, encouraged Matthew to obtain his working at heights ticket and working in confined space ticket, all paid for by atWork Australia.
He also received further financial support in the form of work clothing.
Matthew is now working as an Assembler, a great pathway to his ultimate goal or returning to the mines.
Sarah says, ‘Matthew has overcome many barriers while trying to return to work. It is so great to see him happy and achieving his goals.’
Matthew now receives regular post placement support from the team at atWork Australia and is appreciative of all they have done for him.
“I have had a really good experience, it’s been great that my Job Coach has worked with me, at where I’m at, and has been so understanding!” he says.
