From Shepparton, Victoria, Mark (31) lives with an intellectual disability and PTSD; impacting his ability to concentrate, sleep and function day-to-day.
Mark was incarcerated for a period of six years and during that time took the opportunity to work in the prison bakery, making bread every day for the other inmates and staff.
Mark was eager to use this time to set himself up for a positive transition back to work and daily life when he was released. Mark applied to be a part of the Jobs Now program as a pre-release prisoner. Over the duration of the program, Mark was always engaging with the content and participated in weekly sessions.
Mark was supported through the Jobs Now program by Service Manager, Belinda. From the moment they were introduced, Belinda said, “Mark has been motivated to find employment. Mark needed to know that he had someone on his side who was willing to guide him.”
Belinda and Mark worked together on writing resumes and cover letters for future employers. atWork Australia assisted by providing Mark with work attire and boots so he would be prepared for his first day.
Belinda reached out to Employment Engagement Consultant, Renee, who works directly with scaffolding company, Buildsafe. Renee was able to share Mark’s resume and discuss his experience to help him secure employment.
Mark was successful in gaining full time employment as a scaffolder just three days after his release. Mark had mixed emotions about starting employment so quickly; he was excited and anxious. However, he knew he needed to work and bring structure to his life.
A testament to Mark’s drive and eagerness to work, he has been able to sustain employment through Covid-19 and has started building relationships with work mates.
Mark will be commencing his Certificate III in Civil Construction in mid-December. Mark is planning to work and study at the same time.
Mark said, “Belinda was a fantastic support while I was incarcerated. I am very thankful for the Jobs Now program and for Belinda giving me the opportunity to get back into the workforce. Belinda showed up every day and that meant something”
Mark continues, “I am looking forward to my new future, spending time with my family and friends. Working and studying has given me passion-for-life back.”
