The past few years have been very challenging for Luke as he has had to overcome multiple health barriers. He was determined to create a better life for himself and his young daughter, as a result of his hard work, Luke is now celebrating twenty-six weeks in employment.
Luke had been connected with atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services team in Belconnen, ACT. Luke was successful in finding employment at the beginning of his journey with atWork Australia and was connected with his In-Work Support Coach, Narelle. Luke shared that he lived with multiple health conditions, including having physical limitations, chronic pain, and depression. Narelle tailored her support to suit Luke’s needs and met with him on a fortnightly basis to continue providing support while he was working.
Luke and Narelle developed a strong working relationship and Luke advised that, although he enjoyed the work he was doing, he wanted to pursue opportunities in line with his recent studies, as he had completed a Certificate IV in Education Support for at-risk kids. Then, in July 2023, Luke applied for a position as a Learning Support Assistant with Communities @work and was successful in securing the position.
Luke continued working closely with Narelle as he began his new journey in this new position. Luke was thriving in his new workplace and building great relationships with his colleagues.
Unfortunately, Luke was involved in a car accident, which impacted his mood and motivation. Narelle reminded Luke of the importance of his work and how it has positively impacted his life, both personally and professionally. Narelle encouraged Luke to keep attending his appointments to get support with his mental health through these difficult times. Luke advised that the regular calls and conversation with Narelle provided valuable support at a challenging period of his life.
Luke has recently been approved for a temporary teaching licence, which allows him to assess the students work and participate in parent teacher interviews. Luke has played a major role in supporting the students to set up a pop-up café to raise money for their year 12 graduation.
Luke’s main motivation is his desire to be the best father he possibly can for his daughter, and he is definitely doing that. Luke continues to take positive steps to build a brighter future for him and his daughter. Due to Luke’s hard work ethic he has just received a 12-month contract extension, which provides additional security for him and his family.
