Leon is 32 years old, and before Covid he owned his own small business. However, he lost it all during lockdowns and found himself homeless just with his bicycle and his backpack.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to secure a job when you have no permanent address, and no income to support having a working phone.
Workforce Australia client Leon was connected with Job Coach Lek at the Burwood atWork Australia office. Lek first referred Leon to our Wellness Services to work on health and wellness.
“Leon was living with depression and anxiety. He was not yet ready to work as he needed time and support to work on his health and wellbeing,” said Lek.
Lek supported Leon with food vouchers, clothes and shoes while he worked on his health and wellness.
Leon then found himself a temporary address and looking for a job was his next priority.
Leon had few belongings, but he still had his bicycle and his entrepreneurial spirit and decided he wanted to use his bike to do door-to-door food delivery.
To be able to do this, Leon needed a mobile phone with credit so he could be contactable for deliveries.
Lek and the atWork Australia team supported Leon to purchase a phone and even organised a thermal bike bag to help transport his deliveries.
Leon is now earning an income through his deliveries and his goal is to find permanent accommodation.
“When I next saw Leon, there was no more sorrow in his eyes, but an energetic gaze. He can now see a better future and I’m so proud of Leon,” said Lek.
