20-year-old, Liam, didn’t see the point in his Workforce Australia appointments when he first started attending the Ravenswood, atWork Australia office.
He would sit quietly with his Job Coach, Sarah, during his first few appointments.
“Liam wouldn’t communicate with me when he first started. We would sit in the private office, and he wouldn’t speak or engage,” said Sarah.
However, with regular appointments, Liam began to open up, and Sarah saw Liams lack of self-belief in his own abilities to succeed and find work. This lack of self-belief was leading Liam to make poor choices in his life.
Sarah saw potential in Liam and encouraged him to attend a traffic control course as he had a friend who was also participating. It was through this course that Liam started to realise he was capable of obtaining qualifications and able to succeed.
His Job Coach, Sarah, continued to motivate and encourage Liam, and he shared with Sarah he would like to find employment.
Sarah also referred Liam to our in-house Wellness Services for additional support, and Liam attended other external services to get his health and wellbeing back on track.
Together they developed a resume, and Sarah got to work advocating and promoting Liam to various roles. While it didn’t happen as quickly as Liam would have liked, after a while he did land a role as a Labourer for a shipping company.
Through his new job, he travels to mainland Australia and to other places he never thought he would. He is also able to give back to his mother, who had always supported him through the hard times. He is very proud to be able to help her financially with bills.
“Liam calls me regularly to update me on his achievements and to have someone to celebrate with,” said Sarah. “It is amazing to see his self-belief change so much.”
