As a survivor of domestic violence, Kylie came to atWork Australia’s Mandurah office from a refuge with a commitment to rebuild her life.
Kylie decided she wanted to give back to the community and work within disabilities or youth disadvantage. A goal she’s had since a young age. With two years unemployment and an extensive background in hospitality, it meant retraining was required.
Her Disability Employment Services Job Coach Jamie assisted Kylie by putting her into a Certificate III Community Services course with Alffie, which she completed in 2018. In addition to her course, atWork Australia was also able to assist with gaining other essentials including Work with Children Check, St John First Aid Course, CV Check and a new mobile phone.
To build her experience, Kylie commenced volunteer / work experience at several suitable employers. With this hands-on experience and her recent qualifications, Jamie and Kylie were able to create an appealing resume and cover letter to distribute to suitable organisations within the community service sector.
It all proved invaluable, with Kylie landing a role as a Disability Support Worker at a local not-for-profit community services organisation.
Proud of her achievements, Kylie was excited to tell her daughter and family the exciting news that she got a job. Kylie believes her journey with atWork Australia has been positive and empowering stating she’s looking forward to the next chapter.
“I’m very pleased to have been part of atWork Australia and finding employment has provided me with a happy and rewarding future for my girls,” said Kylie.
Her employer is equally as thrilled to have found a valuable employee.
“Kylie has demonstrated an ability to work collaboratively and is able to communicate clearly with all walks of life, backgrounds and levels.” said her employer. “Kylie has fit right in with the values and beliefs of the company.”
Jamie has found it rewarding watching Kylie work hard at rebuilding her life and fulfilling her goals.
“Kylie has been a pleasure to work with, she is finally doing a career that she has always wanted to work in,” said Jamie.
