Youth Workforce Australia client, Kyle, nervously entered the atWork Australia office in St Marys, New South Wales, with his mother by his side for support.
Kyle, 17, transferred to St Mary’s from another Workforce Australia provider, as he felt his individual needs and vulnerabilities were being overlooked and disregarded.
Upon entering the atWork Australia office, he was met with his Job Coach, Teika, with a smile. With his mother by his side, he was ready to start his employment journey. His mother was there to support Kyle, as well as share his medical history with the team on behalf of Kyle, as it triggers his anxiety.
Kyle has a history of diagnosed mental illness, depression and anxiety due to past trauma. At the age of 14, Kyle was involved in a “gang assault” where he was stabbed & hospitalised. The social, mental health & physical scars trigger bouts of anxiety & fear from within.
Kyle found it overwhelming to leave his home alone and undertake tasks that many of us complete in our daily routine. Kyle was unable to maintain eye contact and conduct a conversation confidently, reliance on his mother was significant. Together, Kyle and Teika decided to work on his confidence, to improve his work and personal life.
Teika referred him to atWork Australia’s Wellness Services for support from a qualified phycologist for tailored support to help improve his overall health, wellbeing and self-confidence. In addition to the counselling support, Kyle was encouraged to undertake study that linked his goal of working in Community Services.
Whilst participating in Wellness Services, he continued to meet with Teika regularly; now, more motivated to attend his appointments.
This was a direct result of an established and solid engagement routine built on trust and support between the pair.
As a result of his incredible transformation and now feeling more confident in his capabilities, Kyle has enrolled in a Certificate III Individual Support, due to commence in February this year.
Kyle’s improved self-awareness and confidence is commendable. His trust and increased engagement when attending appointments has shown progression in all aspects of his behavior.
Teika states that “Watching Kyle’s personal growth has been significant and rewarding. It has taken time to develop the trust in the relationship, however, the communications have become jovial and more engaging with less to no intervention from his mother”
We look forward to assisting Kyle further on his journey to employment.
“I am very happy with the support and interventions provided and the recognition of what I can do to achieve my goals.” Kyle, Workforce Australia client.
