When 20-year-old Kian, first walked into the atWork Australia office in Bulli, NSW, he was very quiet and would only whisper a few words to his Job Coach, Gabrielle.
Kian was living with anxiety and had challenges with how others interacted with him as someone who identifies as transgender. His confidence in himself and his abilities was low.
Together with Gabrielle, they customised and co-designed a plan for Kian to feel ready for work. This included participating in atWork Australia’s Jobs Now program, to build his confidence in interviews.
Kian was also getting external medical support for his anxiety, and with Gabrielle’s support, he started to feel like he was able to meet employers.
After many weeks of working with Gabrielle and knowing she would be by his side, Kian was feeling confident enough to attend a First Steps to Success event where ready to hire employers would be in attendance.
“Attending the First Steps to Success event was the turning point in Kian’s journey. His growth and transformation are amazing,” said Gabrielle.
“A complete change from the whispering and apologetic client we met, Kian knows how to communicate his strengths, needs and feedback at work and with atWork Australia in productive ways.”
“Proud is an understatement. In awe is more accurate of the way Kian now backs himself and his abilities.”
During the event, Kian was introduced to an inclusive employer who was the right fit for him, and he is now working in a part time role.
Disability Employment Services client, Kian, has overcome perceptions of pronouns, anxiety and caring for family members to re-join the workforce in a perfect job for him that allows him work-life balance, with a kind and relaxed employer.
