At twenty-one years old, Kayla came to atWork Australia’s Rosewater office to get support from the Workforce Australia team to enter the workplace for the first time. When Kayla finished high school, she intended to start looking for work immediately. However, Kayla lives with anxiety and depression and these health barriers were impacting on her ability to find work and meet her monthly mutual obligations. When Kayla met her Job Coach, Melissa, she advised that she was becoming overwhelmed with the whole process of looking for work and the new system of reporting to Centrelink.
Kayla advised her Job Coach that she wanted to pursue a career in the childcare industry. Kayla never had a SEEK account, her resume was outdated, and Kayla believed she didn’t have the relevant checks that she would require to start applying for work in the childcare industry. Kayla recognised the barriers holding her back from finding employment. Although, she did not have the motivation to put steps in place to overcome them. For Kayla, the thought of going to an interview was over whelming, as she had very low self-belief.
Melissa began supporting Kayla; first she walked her through the reporting process, clearly explaining each step so Kayla could get a good understanding of the process. Melissa helped Kayla create a SEEK account, developed a new resume and assisted Kayla to reapply for the relevant checks she would require to work in the childcare industry.
During Kayla’s fortnightly appointment, Melissa helped Kayla apply for roles that she was interested in. In addition, Melissa was also contacting employers on Kayla’s behalf to submit her resume for various vacancies. Due to Kayla’s hard work, consistently submitting applications and following up with phone calls, she successfully secured an interview which led to an offer of employment.
Kayla has come a long way on her journey with atWork Australia. Kayla’s Job Coach, Melissa, said, “At the beginning of this journey, Kayla did not have any confidence in her own ability. However, after securing four interviews in a week, she gained confidence in herself. She is a new young woman who now has a spring in her step and a smile on her face.”
atWork Australia has enjoyed supporting Kayla on her employment journey and helping her to make positive changes in her life. Kayla said, “Two weeks ago I barely left the house. Now I have been to four interviews and have a new job. All because my Job Coach helped me to see that I could do it.”
“I can’t believe the difference two weeks cam make,” said Kayla.
