Karen, 58, had worked sporadically across different industries throughout her career, including process work, cleaning and other manual labouring.
Living with medical conditions that left her requiring frequent treatment, medications and interventions, Karen had faced discrimination in previous roles which left her with low confidence.
Along with her medical conditions, Karen also had intermittent personal caring responsibilities that had impacted her ability to maintain work, something that also contributed to her low confidence.
With no formal education, and low confidence from medical factors and caring responsibilities, Karen sought the support of Sarah and Tara at atWork Australia’s Morisset branch, where the team quickly saw the potential in her.
Karen was immediately placed into In-Work Support as she was already working as a process worker but needed some assistance in keeping her role.
The atWork Australia team worked closely with Karen to give her the best financial support available. This included a reimbursement for a Working with Children’s Check, Woolworths Essential Cards for work clothing and purchasing a police check for the role she was currently in.
The team also worked with Karen on her resume, reverse marketing her to employers, and importantly giving her emotional support after contracting Covid-19 and how that impacted her ability to maintain work.
The atWork Australia team offered to discuss any issues with her employer, whilst encouraging her to take regular rest breaks as and when she needed them.
Discussing her job role, Karen said she was ‘over the moon’ and ‘so happy’ with how everything turned out.
She said: “The staff and clients are friendly, no matter who you are. From the cleaners to the doctors, everyone is nice and respectful.”
Karen also thanked atWork Australia for all their help and support throughout the whole process.
She said, “The support is much appreciated. The experience with atWork Australia has been great. Sarah and Tara are very ‘on task’ and genuinely tried their best to get me what I needed when I needed it.”
Sarah, Karen’s In-Work Support Coach, said, “It is a pleasure to support Karen throughout her employment, she is a determined person who approaches all challenges with a smile on her face.”
