Workforce Australia client, Joshua, recently spoke at the atWork Australia employer awards in front of over 100 New South Wales employers.
He shared his journey to meaningful employment, to inspire more people to accept support from atWork Australia. He also encouraged employers to continue to give more people the chance they need to thrive.
Joshua had a traumatic childhood. As a child he was also diagnosed with Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and had trouble concentrating at school.
He found comfort playing AFL, however, didn’t have the right support to pursue a professional career. He then started working as a labourer and did some factory work but found himself bouncing from job to job without a clear direction.
“I just couldn’t hold a job for more than a couple of months,” said Joshua.
He saw a psychologist and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and began to receive help.
“I felt really lost. I was going from job to job, and from employment agency to employment agency,” said Joshua. “But then I walked into atWork Australia, and something felt different.”
“Every time I met with atWork Australia. I felt like I accomplished something.”
The Service Manager Jenni and the team at the St Mary’s office got to know Joshua and worked with him to develop a tailored plan with small goals to help build his confidence. When Joshua found an employer he felt suited his needs, he reached out to his Job Coach for support.
“atWork Australia jumped on my request and had me signed up for the course I needed quickly.”
